How we calculate costs

Our estimates are based on regional labor rate data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, material pricing from national supplier databases, and permit fee schedules from local building departments.

Each city page adjusts for the local cost of living using metropolitan statistical area (MSA) cost indices. A kitchen remodel in Houston (cost index 0.97) costs less than the national average, while the same scope in New York (cost index 1.49) costs significantly more.

We update our pricing data annually and track contractor rate trends across all 50 states. Our calculators let you customize scope, materials, and quality level for an estimate tailored to your specific project.
